"Our geographic reach and cross-practice capabilities are top-rate. That allows us to participate in more sophisticated and novel transactions, and at the same time, makes it more fun."
- Oscar Stephens, Partner, New York
I am a member of the Finance practice, working on international debt capital markets. That includes general financing and, normally, bond issuance work. My main geographic concentration is on Latin America.
A Great Team
I came here as a lateral, right after the merger between Hogan & Hartson and Lovells. I knew I was coming to one of the market's leading firms, with an incredible global reach and a collegiate environment. I found an excellent group of people who are a pleasure to work with. No matter what level you are coming to Hogan Lovells at, this is a great firm.
I have been working with the same two great partners for seven years now. We have a great working relationship and I have learned tons from them. I hope to have some day that kind of relationship with one of the more junior members of the team and see them succeed in life and their profession. Team culture is highly valued. We really trust and support each other all the time. It is one of our main assets and we work to keep it that way.
Advising clients in a way that allows them to get the deal done is the backbone of everything we do. Email correspondence, conference calls, and in-person meetings are a big part of that, and I always try to answer any communications as soon as possible. Clients value and we encourage being able to respond swiftly to any communications, even if it is just to say that we will further review a topic later that day.
We are constantly in touch and seeking new opportunities. For those like me who are interested in issues related to Latin America, we have an amazing network of offices and professionals in our Latin America practice. We recently represented the Republic of Ecuador in its $2,000 million bond issuance transaction. It involved working closely with out Miami office, which represents the Republic on a regular basis. It was a tough transaction, but it got done and the client was happy.
Outside the firm
I love soccer (futbol, football). I played the sport growing up and now I love watching it on TV. I had the chance to enjoy the World Cup this summer and watch many games with colleagues, which was tremendous fun.
Until recently, I was a regular on the firm’s soccer team. Unfortunately, I got injured last time and I may not be able to play for a while. I miss the camaraderie and the post-game beers. We are a diverse group of paralegals, associates, counsel, and partners, but on the pitch we are all teammates.
A Word to the Wise
Always be open to learning.
